Ecosystem Archival
Perkins&Will Phil Freelon Design Competition 2024 / Team Member: Jason Pieper, Laszlo Andrasi, Natalie Salk
The Phil Freelon Design Competition is an annual internal competition at Perkins&Will.
There were 79 teams participated across all Perkins&Will offices and DAR this year.
The open-ended prompt was to imagine the existing San Francisco Public Library in 25 years.
Year 2049

Welcome to the grand opening of the San Francisco Public Library, Ecosystem Archival. Today marks a pivotal moment in our journey toward preserving and revitalizing our precious natural world. With the renovation of the Public Library, we’ve achieved something extraordinary—the creation of the world’s first-ever planetary archive. Our mission is ambitious yet crucial: to establish ecosystem archives worldwide, each serving as a beacon of hope and a catalyst for restoring the ecosystems that sustain us. We invite you to follow the journey of The Girl in Orange as she grows with the evolution of Ecosystem Archival.

Together we are encouraged to develop a deep understanding and appreciation of our natural locale through San Francisco’s library ecosystem. Our community bond is strengthened through a tangible relationship with the vernacular landscape and allows us to interact in a physical reality that we are missing in a highly technological world. We are encouraged to enjoy the landscape, learn
about the natural ecosystems, and research ways in which we can enact change and restore biodiversity in our community.
about the natural ecosystems, and research ways in which we can enact change and restore biodiversity in our community.
Research laboratories offer state of the art technology for scientists and community members to better understand the local habitats around us. Flora and fauna are cataloged in the archives, and native plant seeds are collected and stored in the seed bank for future habitat regeneration. Classrooms and lecture halls offer opportunities to engage with research, while exhibition space provides visitors the ability to contextualize their local experience within a global conversation. The building itself begins to repair the local environment, by sequestering carbon, storing and filtering rainwater, and generating on site electricity.
The iconic central atrium is repurposed into a series of virtual portals to fellow planetary archives around the world. Within these interactive exhibit spaces, visitors can interface with international researchers, access virtual research displays and participate in
real-time cultural exchanges with other library-goers around the world. Together our global community of engaged individuals has the power to regenerate ecosystems and reverse the effects of climate change.

Ecosystem Archival extends beyond the library and into its local community, building a healthier ecosystem for future generations.
